Hiking Out

Something many people may not know about Utah, since we are a high mountain desert, is that Utahns do quite a bit of sailing. We have lots of lakes and reservoirs used for recreation, but the best sailing takes place on the Great Salt Lake. For sailors, "hiking out" means leaning your body weight as far to windward as possible in order to decrease the way the boat heels or moves away from the wind. Plus, I just love this quote by Elizabeth Edwards: "She stood in the storm, and when the wind did not blow her away, she adjusted her sails.” I think it makes a good personal mantra, especially after stormy times in life.
