Stephen Colbert described improv to college students in a commencement address this way:
“Well, you are about to start the greatest improvisation of all. With no script. No idea what's going to happen, often with people and places you have never seen before. And you are not in control.”
While improv described this way may sound a little frightening, it can also be a wonderful form of play. The 4 Common Corners artists were asked to create without a script, to be spontaneous, and make art from whatever they had available without the often-intricate planning involved in their ideation. Only one rule was imposed on the group—each piece had to contain some form of “corner.”
