Nothing expresses the desert heat more than the isolation of a long highway stretching out to the heat waves against distant mountains. In this case, I quilted a simple straight highway in a graphical way. I used raw-edge applique, encouraged the raggedness of the edges, and then slashed between the quilting to expose the layers underneath. These are the mirages induced by the rising heat. I attached a few seed beads to suggest bare and burnt foliage. Finally, I attached quilted rectangles to the edges to suggest the blurred landscape edges.
