Wall Flowers

by Debra Goley

Oh to be a wall flower just once to see how my grandmother along with mother would work in tandem as they created floral art to meet a deadline. My grandmother’s flower shop gave her such joy I am told. The floral business was certainly a mainstay in every town whereby you can stop in and order a boutonniere, corsage, anniversary or special occasion bouquet for someone or have a delivery made in memory of a loved one. Walking in simulated the senses to new heights. What a sight to be seen and smell the roses. I have heard the stories from my mom about working in Lacey's Flower shop and how she lived behind the shop. Deliveries made daily and how her job would be to unwrap the stems and put in water or refrigerate. Now days we order by phone or go to a big box store to see if anything on hand ready made to suit the recipient. While the floral industry has changed how it marketed, ordered and delivered, the sentiment remains the same. Its the way we are.
