Fallow Fields

by Diana Fox

47” by 36”

This piece reflects the Dust Bowl’s stark landscape—fields left fallow, soil lifted by wind, and a land strained by relentless drought. The windmill appears as a purposeful symbol, built to draw water when rain refused to fall.

The presence of prairie grass hints at the destruction of native grasses to make way for crop planting. The work invites viewers to consider both the fragility of the land and the enduring relationship between people and the places they depend on.
